POSITION SUMMARY:  Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID program and are individuals trained to use specific teaching methodologies and materials to work with AVID students. Training will occur after hiring. Tutors work with AVID elective students individually and in small groups in all academic areas. Tutors help students achieve their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups, guiding them toward academic and personal excellence, and become active participants in the learning, growth, and personal development of AVID students. Tutorials run by AVID tutorials are inquiry-based, use Socratic questioning and collaborative learning techniques that allow students to come up with the answers to their own questions while working with fellow students in small groups. Each AVID middle school and high school has a different schedule for the AVID elective.

    • Be of college-age and enrolled in a two or four-year school,
    • Be an adult with college and/or first-hand career experience,
    • Be enrolled at JCC or JCPS as a CCP (ECA or CTLA) student, enrolled as an IB or AP student working to earn college credits while in high school, or a JCPS student leader in good academic standing. • Be motivated, organized, and successful. Be an enrolled college student, who believes that AVID students will succeed.
  • Represent balanced academic backgrounds, some liberal arts majors, others science or mathematics majors.
  • Be people who will work in a supportive manner with middle and high school students and will be able to understand the delicate position they will occupy; they are advocates of students, yet ultimately they are responsible to the teacher. They must be willing to meet regularly to discuss student progress and to confer with the teacher about future tutorial plans.
  • Be on time, be reliable, and meet the Johnston County Schools dress code.
  • Sign in and out each day through TACS in order keep up with tutor training hours.

  • Conduct tutorial sessions that underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes.

  • Work with students in any phase of the writing process, such as brainstorming, clustering, read-arounds, revision, and editing.
  • Allow students to shoulder the responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them with strategies that they will become accustomed to using independently.
  • Reinforce the idea that learning extends far beyond mere studying to form the basis for long term accomplishments.
  • Assist students in any subject area, by being familiar with students’ textbooks and materials and AVID classroom resources.
  • Evaluate student binders, including calendars, class and textbook notes, and learning logs.
  • Assist in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation.
  • Facilitate lessons that will enhance student knowledge in technology, reading, writing, problem solving, and communication.
  • Take responsibility for the tone and atmosphere of the AVID classroom.
  • Acknowledge the individuality of all AVID students and work to develop their academic and personal pride, while building relationships centered around trust and respect.

  • Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions.
  • Communicate regularly with AVID coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern.
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for AVID students to follow.
  • Possess a sound understanding of the AVID system and its mission in order to serve as an additional support to AVID students as they strive to fulfill their goal to attend college.
  • Expose students to different careers, college programs and extracurricular activities.
