Job Description

1. Valid Iowa coaching authorization, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and past leadership experiences (coaching/managing a weight room) required.

2. Valid Iowa Teaching Certification preferred but not required

Basic Function: Promote a fundamentally sound strength & conditioning program with emphasis on physical fitness, ability and performance development and to encourage a strong work -ethic and a positive attitude toward strength training and physical conditioning.


1. Report to the HS and MS Activities/Athletic Director on all matters of a critical nature.

2. The success of a strength and conditioning program has a strong influence on the community's image of the entire system. Public exposure is a considerable responsibility and community/parent pressure for winning performance is taxing, but must not override the objectives of good sportsmanship and good mental health.

3. The position includes other unusual aspects such as extended time, risk injury factor and due process predicaments.

4. It is the express intent of this job description to give sufficient guidance to function. In cases not specifically covered, it shall be assumed that a coach shall exercise common sense and good judgment.

Additional Qualifications:

1. Be certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.

2. Has the ability to organize and supervise a total strength and conditioning program.

3. The head strength and conditioning coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the program and, at the same time, must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. Keep updated on current strength and conditioning research and attend appropriate training.

4. Effectively and properly motivate students and athletes to achieve maximum potential in all areas of performance and the head strength and conditioning coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.

5. Perform other duties and special projects as it pertains to the strength and conditioning and/or physical fitness promotion.

Administrative Responsibilities:

1. Has a thorough knowledge of all the athletic policies approved by the Johnston Community Schools' Board of Education and is responsible for their implementation by the entire staff of the program.

2. Has knowledge of existing system, state and league regulations; implements same consistently and interprets them for staff.

3. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.

4. Communicate with and be liaison between Community Education for program development, implementation, scheduling and facility usage.

5. Direct all facets of the strength and conditioning program, staff and facility operations (7th-12th grades).

6. Create a vision and expectations for the Strength and Conditioning program for grades 7-12. Established the fundamental philosophy, skills and techniques to be taught by staff. Designs conferences, clinics and staff meetings to insure staff awareness of the overall program.

7. Create a Strength and Conditioning program that focuses on development of the total athlete while providing flexibility for performance specific development.

8. Assist in the hiring of highly qualified assistant strength and conditioning coaches to assist in leading the HS and MS weight rooms.

9. Develop Strength and Conditioning staff by providing opportunities to lead, collaborating with Strength and Conditioning staff to implement best practices and by evaluating performance of assistant coaches.

10. Coordinate schedules for HS and MS weight rooms and communicate these schedules to all involved parties. Schedules should be coordinated 3-4 weeks in advance of the start of a new season (fall, winter, spring, summer)

11. Strength and Conditioning Director is responsible for creating all training programs but should collaborate with athletic coaches for sport specific


12. Coordinate and conduct orientation meetings for those who use the facility about proper training, nutrition and dangers of banned substances.

13. Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation and, at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and evaluates all assistants.

14. Maintains discipline, adjusts grievances and works to increase morale and cooperation.

15. Completes paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submits to the athletic office within 24 hours.

16. Stays in regular contact with the MS/HS Activities Director and keeps both updated and informed on a regular basis.

17. Attends all Activities Department meetings.

18. Performs such other duties which may be assigned by the athleticdirector/principal.

Finance and Equipment:

1. Participates in the budgeting function with the athletic director by establishing requirements for the next season. Recommends equipment guidelines as to type, style, color or technical specifications. Is responsible for operating within budget appropriations.

2 Is accountable for all equipment and collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned. Arranges for issuing, storing and reconditioning of equipment and submits annual inventory and current records concerning the same.

3. Properly marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.

4.Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices, authorizes who may enter, issue or requisition equipment. Oversee the selection, installation, and maintenance of performance equipment including cleaning and repair.

5. Permits the athletes to only be in authorized areas of the building at the appropriate times.

6.Examines weight rooms before and after practices and scheduled sessions, checking on general cleanliness of the facility. Responsible for cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment.

7. Secure all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty.

8. Instills in each participant a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use.

Public Relations:

1. Fosters relationships with all coaches and athletes to support all athletic programs within the Activities Department. This support includes regularly

attending Johnston Athletic events.

2. Promotes the program within the school through recruiting students that are not involved in athletics.

3. Responsible for the quality, effectiveness and validity of any oral or written release to local media.

4. Responsible for maintaining good public relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers and fans.

5. Attends and contributes to the four seasonal (fall, winter, spring, summer) parent meetings organized by the MS/HS Activities Directors.
